  • Before You Buy

Ask Yourself This... Is it time to buy a new or used, car, or truck? We're here to help. Be sure to ask yourself the following questions and arm yourself with the answers before you look through the ads, research online, or step into the dealer's showroom. To find out much more on each of these topics, go to your Credit Union's AutoSMART site and click on the Tips and Advice section.

    • How much can I afford?
According to most financial planners, a monthly auto payment should be no more than 20% of your gross monthly income. Also, know your credit score up front and what it means to you.
    • Have I researched my options?
Try not to let your purchase decision be an emotional one. There is an incredible amount of information available on the internet, and the more information you have, the better prepared you will be.
    • How much did the dealer pay?
Knowing the invoice price on a new vehicle can help you negotiate a better deal. On a used vehicle, it's important to know the wholesale and retail values.
    • What am I willing to pay?
Consider whether you will be paying cash or will be financing. What rebates or incentives are currently offered? Establish a budget and stand by it.
    • What is my current car worth?
At your Credit Union's AutoSMART site, just go to the Used Car section and click on Trade-in Values. Know your trade-in value in advance and have the salesman show you the price for the car you want separate from the trade-in amount he is offering.
    • Where is my best financing?
Don't be fooled by 0% or low-interest rate financing. We've done the math for you: Credit union rates can't be beat.
    • What about the extras?
Once you reach the Finance & Insurance (F&I) office, the dealer will offer you various extras to protect your vehicle or loan. Ask yourself which extras makes sense to you and adds value to your purchase. Of all the choices you might be offered, we recommend that you primarily consider Guaranteed Auto Protection (GAP) and a Service Contract.
    • Do I know how to negotiate?
Negotiate up from invoice, not down from Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) or "sticker" price on a new vehicle. On a used vehicle, negotiate up from wholesale value, not down from retail value.
    • What are the essentials?
It's important that you get the best overall purchase price, a reasonable monthly payment with credit union financing, and a good deal on your trade.
